Burnout – Getting Back on Track

Burnout happens when you avoid being human for too long ~ unknown

Burnout is real

Recently I found myself in a severe state of burnout and didn’t even realize it. I’ve always been a go go go type of person and thought it was just normal to live this way. Being productive is a good thing right?

I’m here to be a voice of reason. It’s not a good thing when you find yourself leaving behind the beautiful healthy habits that you once had incorporated into your daily routine and replacing them with unhealthy ones. You realize that your morning meditation is a thing of the past. You can’t even remember the last time you went to the gym. The book you were dying to finish is now collecting dust on your nightstand. You’re spending your hard-earned money on impulse buys and things you don’t even need. You’re having one too many glasses of wine, and you’re feeling like an empty shell of a human just doing the motions and repeating the same thing day by day. It’s safe to say that you might be self-sabotaging!

The reason I wrote this post is that I know that if I was finding myself in a state of burnout, there are many others out there feeling the same way and sometimes we just need a bit of a pick me up!

The Viscous Cycle

Wake up and turn off the phone alarm. Go to the washroom and brush your teeth. Begin the dread of traffic on the way to work. Get in your car and sit in the traffic. Wonder how some people even have a license. Get to work and go through emails and a list of to-dos for the day. Your boss sends you yet another email with more tasks to add to your list. Overtime is offered and you take it. After all, you have bills to pay. Queue shit mood. Get through the day and leave work. Sit in traffic. Get home and eat fast food because you’re too drained to make dinner. Sit on the couch and think about things you wish you had the energy to do. So instead you pour a glass of wine and get lost in filling your online shopping baskets.

Sound familiar? We all experience burnout at least once in our lives. If you haven’t and you’re superhuman please comment below and let us in on what your secret is!

The fire-burning question here is – How do we pull ourselves out of this dreaded burnout?

Enough is enough we tell ourselves. Something has got to give. We’re not robots and we shouldn’t live as such.

How to Withdraw from Burnout

Number One ~ Take Accountability, and quit making excuses why you can’t achieve something. Realize that the decisions you make today will determine your future. We are the creators of our lives and we have the power to write our own stories.

Number Two ~ Look Inward, and ask yourself “what feelings have I been avoiding?” “What hurts right now?” “What emotions am I holding on to?” And “When do I feel most aligned with myself?”

Number Three ~ Set a Goal or Intention, and write about it. There is surely something that you were trying to accomplish at some point that you would love to get back to. Create an affirmation to coincide with your goal/intention. Eg. “I am crushing all of my fitness goals”, “I am in the best shape I’ve ever been in my entire life”, “I am beaming with confidence and it feels amazing”

Number Four ~ Get Back To Healthy Habits and start now! Get back to your Morning Routine. Welcome to your morning, meditation even if it’s only for 5 minutes. Drink your glass of water upon rising before you jump to coffee. Have your work clothes ready the night before to allow yourself some breathing room in the morning. Hit the gym whether it’s 2 days a week or 6 days a week, start somewhere! Meal prep at least one day a week so that you have a healthy dinner ready for you when you get home.

Number Five ~ Take On a New Challenge, and get out of your comfort zone. This is arguably the most effective way to get yourself out of a rut and start to feel alive again. Think of something that you always dreamed of doing or learning. If are you intrigued by pet photography and want to learn how to capture the cutest photo of your dog, take a course on SkillShare. Have you been wanting to try a local fitness BootCamp? This is your sign to do it now!
